I am a woodworker who builds furniture and art objects. These things all tend to focus around a desire for the specificity of the material I use and their manipulation to achieve a presence that is immediate as well as understated...something friendly and relate-able. Somewhere in there is the desire for place that people tend to share, which could be perhaps a curative for the displacement that has increasingly become contemporary experience. Of course the desire does not create the reality even despite insistence. And our world feels complicated exactly because it is---filled with opportunities for sociality of all kinds. This work tends to move between the convergence of these ideas---of the solidity of presence and place and the whirl of contingency which I daresay shows up in everything...even a simple cabinet.
